A Special Birthday Wish

Clothes, jewelry, and music may be a few things that come to mind when thinking of possible birthday wishes for a young girl who is about to turn 11 years old.

Lauren Arnold of Enfield, Nova Scotia, had a different kind of birthday wish in mind. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two years earlier Lauren decided to raise money to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

“I hope to raise money for research so we can learn more about the disease and help find a cure,” says Lauren.

When her mom Jane noticed the Diabetes Summer Surge campaign she showed it to Lauren. “She’s a very persistent girl and she became immediately interested in helping out,” says Jane. Lauren came up with her own idea of hosting a walk-a-thon, car wash, and a BBQ in her community.

“My family and I are extremely proud of Lauren’s motivation to help organizations such as the Canadian Diabetes Association,” states Jane.

This isn’t the first sign that Lauren enjoys volunteering her time and raising money. Earlier in 2010, Lauren took the initiative of organizing a fundraiser in her school for the earthquake in Haiti. Lauren’s ‘Help for Haiti’ helped bring in over $300. Her love of horses also spills over to her volunteer work with a local Therapeutic Riding Association in support of people with physical, mental and emotional disabilities.
